Sleep can become difficult when your mind has been active all day and does not seem ready to stop at night

You may get into bed exhausted, then find yourself thinking about conversations, decisions, responsibilities or everything you need to do tomorrow.

Sometimes the pressure to sleep can then become another thing to worry about.

When overthinking and stress start affecting sleep

You may be physically ready to rest while your mind continues behaving as though there is still something to solve.

You might be:

  • lying awake thinking about the day

  • planning or worrying about tomorrow

  • feeling tired but unable to settle

  • waking during the night and struggling to switch off again

  • watching the clock and worrying about how little sleep you are getting

  • feeling frustrated before bedtime because you expect sleep to be difficult

  • noticing that stress makes your sleep noticeably worse

  • feeling less able to cope during the day because you are exhausted

  • trying harder and harder to make yourself sleep

Sometimes trying harder to sleep makes switching off even harder

Sleep happens most naturally when the brain and body feel able to let go of alertness.

When bedtime becomes associated with effort, frustration or worry, the mind can remain more activated at exactly the time you want it to settle.

Therapy can help you begin changing the patterns around sleep and create a calmer relationship with bedtime.

Therapy for sleep difficulties can help you feel calmer and more able to switch off

The aim is not to make sleep another task you have to get right. It is to help rest feel more natural again.

Our work may focus on helping you:

● reduce overthinking at bedtime

● feel calmer as you prepare for sleep

● respond differently when you wake during the night

● reduce anxiety about not sleeping

● switch off from the day more easily

● feel less pressure around bedtime

● build confidence in your ability to rest

● feel more settled and refreshed

Everyone's sleep difficulties are different, so the work is shaped around what is happening for you.
